

Muscat: A total of 2,596 deaths among elderly Omanis were recorded in Ministry of Health institutions in 2025, down 45 per cent compared with the previous year, according to data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
Circulatory diseases accounted for the largest share of the recorded deaths, with 628 cases, or 24.2 per cent of the total.
Respiratory diseases ranked second with 547 deaths (21.1 per cent), followed by infectious and parasitic diseases with 538 deaths (20.7 per cent).
According to NCSI, the data showed that 177 deaths (6.8 per cent) were attributed to neoplasms, while diseases of the genitourinary system accounted for 140 deaths (5.4 per cent).
Digestive system diseases recorded 126 deaths (4.9 per cent), while endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases accounted for 90 deaths (3.5 per cent).
Diseases of the nervous system and blood and blood-forming organs each accounted for about 1 per cent of the recorded deaths, with 26 and 25 cases, respectively.
Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue accounted for eight deaths (0.3 per cent), while chromosomal abnormalities and related disorders recorded three deaths (0.1 per cent).
A further 288 deaths (11.1 per cent) were classified under other causes.
